Science Of Dental Materials

The Science of Dental Materials is an applied basic science dealing with the physical, chemical and biological properties of the materials used in clinical dentistry and their interaction with other tissues. An understanding of these properties as well as their handling...

The knowledge of Dental materials is important to make optimal selection of various
materials, understand their behavior, use, handling and manipulation and safety
considerations. It includes Items such as resin composites, cements, glass ionomers,
ceramics, base and noble metals, amalgam alloys, gypsum materials, impression material and
many other materials used in preventive, restorative and prosthetic dentistry. The potential of
this information to predict clinical performance and to analyze the cause of failure of various
materials is of great importance. Dental materials also include the principles of engineering,
physics, chemistry and biology.
As a result, the mechanical and physical characteristics of the materials and instruments can
be better understood and optimal clinical services can be achieved.
The subject of science of dental materials at undergraduate level enables the students to
recognize the clinical, technical and scientific rationale for the use of materials in clinical
dental practice. The course curriculum is designed to introduce dental materials science to
students and facilitate their study of physical and chemical properties that are related to
selection of these products by the dentist and to identify characteristics of materials that affect their biological safety. The practical component of the course involves hands-on
experience of the materials and their manipulation in the laboratory.
The Department of Dental Materials includes a team of experienced and dedicated teachers.
It also has a well-equipped laboratory where students can develop basic practical skills and
get acquainted with commonly used dental materials.
To meet the contemporary education standards and facilitate knowledge at a professional
level, the department acquires various teaching strategies such as lectures on multimedia,
video demonstration, tutorials, practical’s and routine assessment tests.
